Justice League vs Avengers by George Perez. If you can name all heroes here, you're as sad as me.
So I've been tagged by
the Bionic Octopus, who has decided to live up to her superhero name and instigated a superhero
game of tag, five questions about superheroes.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why? (Assume you also get baseline superhero
enhancements like moderately increased strength, endurance and agility.)
Sometimes when I despair of the world, I would like the power to teleport and a colt 45 with unlimited ammo,
but generally I'd go for either x-ray vision or the power of flight, for all the obvious reasons.
Which, if any, 'existing' superhero(es) do you fancy, and why?
Dangerous question there. There's a fine line to thread between giving an original answer and coming over like
Comic Book Guy. Anyway, I've always liked
The Scarlet Witch, as well as Ms.
Marvel...
Which, if any, 'existing' superhero(es) do you hate?
OK, here's the tough one. What would your superhero name be? (No prefab porn-name formulas here, you have
to make up the name you think you'd be proud to mask under.)
Well, I did think about Workers Hammer, but then I'd get the Sparts on my neck...
When I was still harbouring illusions of becoming a comics artist, I'd created a hero called Golden Eagle,
which is as good a name as any.
For extra credit: Is there an 'existing' superhero with whom you identify/whom you would like to be?
I've always had a guilty liking for Captain America, symbol of obnoxious patriotism that he appears to be
at first sight or not. After all, he was concieved at the end of the Great Depression; his best writers
have portrayed him as a leftist and more to the point, at one point his greatest enemey was ...
Richard
Nixon!
But are there any real leftist, let alone socialist superheroes, other than the usual Soviet "heroes" created
during the Cold War as foils for Iron Man or Captain America ? Most superheroes defend the status quo and so
defend capitalism; those who want to change the world, tend more to the fascistic overlord type than the hero
of the people type.
Pass it on. Three people please, and why they're the wind beneath your wings.
First one goes to Greg Morrow, the ringleader of
superhero orientated comics blog Howling Curmudgeons.
Second one to Charlie Stross, the one Scottish sf
writer who isn't a socialist. Finally, let's see what
James Nicoll, (in)famous for his incredible accidents, makes of this.
This is just a place for me to jot down some random thoughts and reactions to the news so I don't have to yell at the television or radio, or mutter to myself whilst reading the news.
