Via Digby, the latest clueless
whine about how poor old Joe Lieberman is being oppressed by antiwar Democrats:
The bloggers who have noisily intervened deny they're interested in ideological purity. They point to their support in
Senate races for pro-life candidates. But on Iraq, the liberal blogs brook no dissent.
As Digby says, the War on Iraq "is not a tiny little policy difference". The War on Terror, of which the War on Iraq is only one part,
is a question of principles. The War on Terror goes against anything the Democratic Party and America should stand for and that's why
decent people want to get rid of Lieberman:
Because Lieberman supports the War on Terror he supports the idea that the US president can invade and occupy indefinately any country that
takes his fancy.
Because Lieberman supports the War on Terror he supports the idea that the CIA can keep secret prisons around the world into which
people can be disappeared, tortured and killed.
Because Lieberman supports the War on Terror he supports the idea that the CIA can kidnap anyone anywhere in the world and sent them to
friendly countries to be tortured.
Because Lieberman supports the War on Terror he supports the idea that people can be held prisoner indefinately, without being charged and without
a chance to defend themselves in a court of law.
Because Lieberman supports the War on Terror he supports the idea the US army can torture people to "the equivalent of major organ failure".
Because Lieberman supports the War on Terror he supports the idea that the president can disregard any law up to and including the Constitution
if he believes it interferes with the war.
Because Lieberman supports the War on Terror he supports the idea that your phonelines can be tapped, your mail can be opened, your house searched
without your knowledge and without democratic or jucidial oversight.
This is the reality of the War on Terror, a warping of America's founding ideals in favour of a fear-driven vision of empire, in which any
vile dead can be eternally justified by "9/11". It doesn't matter what they think it should be like, or what they assumed they were supporting,
all that matters is, what Lieberman and his ilk helped make this possible. Intentions don't matter here, outcomes do.
This is just a place for me to jot down some random thoughts and reactions to the news so I don't have to yell at the television or radio, or mutter to myself whilst reading the news.
