White violence is always exceptional

Of course the attempted murder of congresswoman Gifford and the very real murder of the six people who did die is not an act of political violence, let alone terrorism white rightwing violence is always exceptional, an unfortunate incident, the act of a mentally ill person with no need to be put into context:

Palin and her penis envy
It is a common phenomenon, long studied and explained by social psychology that when individuals from our in-group or privileged individuals commit questionable acts, these acts are explained individually. When individuals from out-groups, or groups that are socially unpopular, commit questionable acts, these acts are explained as part of group membership, as categorical. The former are exceptions, the latter are representative. That is how racial and ethnic prejudice persist and how white privilege is preserved. One only has to imagine what media discourse would be, had the shooter been non-White, Latino or Muslim.

So, this timeline is one of white, domestic terrorism, fueled by seditious rhetoric from various media outlets and figures. The fact that the perpetrators are not part of a single organization does not change that fact. Social movements can exist without social movement organizations.

As for mental illness, it is the easy individual culprit, the one factor that, without further elaboration, explains everything. This is as if mental illness existed in a social and cultural vacuum, which it does not, of course. To invoke mental illness may explain outrageous behavior (i.e. behavior outside of the norms) but it does not explain the commission of specific acts (assassination attempt against a Democratic Congresswoman, that still remains to be explained). But to invoke mental illness provides some relief that we are not dealing with organized violence and that therefore, there is nothing socially and politically significant going on and no deep questioning to be had.

Circlejerk journalism

Professional anti-semitism accusers Just Journalism want you to read their report on how the London Review of Books has covered Israel in all its tl;dr glory and come away convinced of how prejudiced the LRB is towards poor old Israel. Yet if this was their goal, the presentation of the report lets them down. The long, long text is enlivened by quotes from various LRB articles and photos of various Israeli and Palestinian outrages. All of which, with chapter headings like “The Second Lebanon War: 2006” gives the impression to a casual reader that this is some sort of lefty analysis of the Israel/Palestine situation, rather than a critique of the LRB’s supposed anti-Israel attitude.

You do wonder why they extract quotes like this 2003 Edward Said one: Almost a decade after the end of South African apartheid, this ghastly racist wall is going up with scarcely a peep from the majority of Israelis, rather than quote from their own report. As if they believe the quotes themselve are so horrifying as to make their case for them, that any neutral reader will immediately see how outrageous they are. It’s something you also see in socalled “Decent left” sites like Harry’s Place where the bloggers and their readers have disappeared so far up their own assholes that just mentioning the enemy du jour is reason enough for a two minute hate, without having to explain that they’re wrong and evil or why they are. That’s the danger of the circlejerk: you spent so much time talking to people who always agree with you that you’re no longer able to convince others.

What do Bristol Palin and Ann Widdecombe have in common?

A lack of dignity and self respect.

Ann Widdecombe is the picture of elegance dancing on Strictly

Reading Pandagon today I was amused to find out that in both America and Britain have the same problems with untalented rightwing celebrity contestants in their dance shows. Across the Atlantic, they have rightwingers voting for Bristol Palin in Dancing with the Stars to teach uppity liberals a lesson, while in old blighty it’s Anne Widdecombe making a fool of herself on Strictly come Dancing.

As you know, Strictly Come Dancing is a lighthearted entertainment show and dance competition featuring a dozen or so celebrities who’ve never had dancing lessons and their professional partners. Some of the celebs find out that they’re actually good at show dancing, some find out they’re crap and weeks of training doesn’t change that much, while most muddle through for shorter or longer periods. Widdecombe is of the second category, hopeless and with no chance of improving. There’s no shame in being a bad dancer, but what Widdecombe does goes against the spirit of the show: she doesn’t even attempt to try and dance to the best of her abilities, but flat out refuses to do anything she deems indecent. Though how shaking your hips is indecent while being dragged over the dance floor legs akimbo with your bum sticking out isn’t, I’ll never know.

Had she any dignity and sense of moral responsibility, she would withdraw, but I can’t see Widdecombe doing that: she has a much too huge ego. As a result, each week better and more deserving dancers are voted off. It’s a typical Tory move to abuse priviledge this way, disguising ego as principle by saying it would be rude to withdraw when people keep voting for you.

Poor Bristol Palin may be even worse off, lacking dancing talent but kept in Dancing with the Stars not because the voters find it funny to keep her in, as with Widdecombe, but to teach liberals a lesson:

Bristol is unpopular with the judges and the fans not because of any personality traits or anything she’s done wrong, but because she doesn’t work hard and she sucks. If she wasn’t considered a member of the wingnut tribe, she would have been gone a long time ago. But due to extensive conservative online organizing and possible cheating, Palin in hanging in.

[…]

Oh, those wily liberals! Always smiling and so smug, thinking they’re so cool. We’ll show them. We’ll get Bristol Palin to win on “DWTS”, even though she doesn’t deserve it, and elect any nutbar to Congress with an “R” behind their name. It’s all culture war and everything is about scoring points, damn the consequences. The possibility that it doesn’t actually piss off many liberals—for instance, I’ve never seen “DWTS”, couldn’t tell you who’s on it, or who has ever won it—didn’t seem to have been a factor.

As with Widdecombe, the dignified thing for Palin to have done by now was to resign, rather than suffer being kept in the show for ulterior motives. But then dignity is not a virtue much seen on the right, is it.

Buy into the culture of death

Yesterday, David Willis, creator of webcomic Shortpacked decided to help out a few pals by promoting their book. He wasn’t the only one, this was all a part of a campaign to for one day make Machine of Death the number one book sold on Amazon.com.

They actually succeeded, in the process bumping Glenn Beck’s latest fart collection of that spot and Beck responded in his usual adult manner, mentioning it in his tv show as an example of “the culture of death”.

Want to piss him off a second time?

Doin’ the Rand Paul Curb Stomp

I could never watch American History X because some kind soul spoilered the horrific curb stomp scene in it, in which a skinhead forces a victim to lie prone on the ground biting the curb, then kicks him hard in the back of the head. Now, thanks to the Rand Paul campaign, we can finally watch a pg-13 version of that scene:

The victim in this case is Move-On volunteer Lauren Valle who was leafletting in front of a Rand Paul campaign meeting, while the perp is “the Rand Paul for Senate Bourbon County coordinator Tim Profftt“. Apparantly Valle’s shocking display of political disagreement and blatant liberal propaganda activities made this guy and his friends see red. Rand Paul is supposed to be on the libertarian end of the Republican spectrum, but based on his supporters’ behaviour straight out fascism is a more accurate description.
