Comment of The Day

The very, very honorable John McCain’s on the ground, under the media radar campaign of vicious robocalls and 3rd party funded racist scaremongering has succeeded.

It’s succeeded in siccing the ultra-right’s flying buttmonkeys of Weimar Republicanism on, of all things, a voter registration charity, ACORN.

ACORN has found itself not only investigated by the FBI and publicly accused of terrorism and anti-Americanism, but also has had its premises and staff attacked and threatened. Why? For trying to get people to exercise their constitutional right to do the very thing the country was established for, choose their own future by voting.

There’s your McCain campaign strategy in a nutshell. Attack the vote itself. Cast doubt in advance on the validity of the process of voting; focus on fraud, even though there isn’t any, thus potentially invalidating the actual election result in the mind of a sizeable proportion of the electorate even before it happens. Tell them it’s all a big conspiracy that the media is complicit in, hire dimestore fascist rabble-rousers like Palin to whip those people into a frenzy of expectant bile and better still tell them that those people – that one- are not real Americans, thus tapping into the primal fear of an immigrant-descended population, that they are not real Americans themselves.

Voila, McCain’s got the country between a rock and hard place if Obama wins. It’ll be like the preppy riots, but much bigger, much more downmarket and with more guns.

I say ‘if’ he wins; the McCain ‘clean hands’ backup plan (I think this is a fair inference to make, what with the bile and the whipping up and Palin and all the maverick, lone wolf imagery and that) appears to be the hope for the fortuitous appearance of a lone assassin. A hope which is being nudged a little bit quite a lot:

John McCain, final presidential debate:

“I’m proud of the people who come to our rallies.”

All of this preamble explains why I find this comment to a TPM post about reporters being attacked at Palin rallies to be either amazingly sweet and naive or conversely, amazingly heroic and rational. Or both. I’m not sure; but it is quintessentially American.

It is very important that we stay firm but calm. We need to follow Senator Obama’s example and stay cool but take action.

This assault, the vandalizing of the ACORN offices… the beyond ‘outrageous’ ground game/robocalls/mailers that McCain is using now may feed this ugly frenzy. People are believing lies and for most of them this is what is making them afraid and full of hate. We have to remember it is because they are believing ‘lies’. Lies that have been repeated over and over again until they get talked about like rumor and urban legend and seem to be true.
We can understand that they have been manipulated and are being used. We can understand that if we were believing what they were believing we might feel just like they do.

I think most of us here know that the answer is get out their and fight to win the election. As Senator Obama said when a crowd started booing McCain… we don’t need your boos… we need to VOTE. So, as ChronoSpark and many others on TPM are doing I would rather use my energy fighting to win than ‘booing’ about what they are doing!

Yes, Yes, Yes WE Can!

McCain may have some really nasty people on his side willing to do anything to win but Senator Obama has US!

Awww, bless – but I would reply, yes, very nice, Obama has ‘YOU!’. But do ‘YOU!’ have guns?

Well They Would, Wouldn’t They?

Congressional Democrats think that stealing national assets to cover private losses is just fine and dandy and want to act fast to save the banking system:

Rep. Frank sees Congress acting fast on bailout plan

They think Bush’s bailing out the banks is brilliant:

Democrats see boost for $50 billion econ stimulus By Richard Cowan

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The urgent need for the U.S. Congress to approve a Bush administration plan to rescue Wall Street has given Democrats renewed hope of enacting another economic stimulus package for Main Street, congressional aides said on Friday.

For months, House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other leading Democrats in Congress have been pushing $50 billion in emergency spending they say would spur the flagging U.S. economy.

I wonder why? Here’s your answer:

Sept. 19 (Bloomberg) — The market storm that brought down Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc., American International Group Inc. and other pillars of U.S. finance may have also blown holes in the portfolios of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senator John Kerry and more than 50 other members of Congress.

Altogether, 56 senators and representatives had stakes in AIG, Lehman, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Bear Stearns Cos. or IndyMac Bancorp Inc. — some of the biggest casualties of the market bloodbath — according to the Center for Responsive Politics. The most recent annual disclosure filings list investments as of Dec. 31, 2007, and reveal the size of holdings only within a range of values. Lawmakers may have sold shares since then.

I should’ve known.

This Is How They Do It

Lost everything in the recession? Foreclosed? Homeless? Well, now you’ve lost your vote too – Republican ratfuckery in Michigan, from the Michigan Messenger via the estimable Attaturk:

The chairman of the Republican Party in Macomb County, Mich., a key swing county in a key swing state, is planning to use a list of foreclosed homes to block people from voting in the coming election as part of the state GOP’s effort to challenge some voters on Election Day.

“We will have a list of foreclosed homes and will make sure people aren’t voting from those addresses,” party chairman James Carabelli told Michigan Messenger in a telephone interview earlier this week. He said the local party wanted to make sure that proper electoral procedures were followed…

Carabelli is not the only Republican Party official to suggest the targeting of foreclosed voters. In Ohio, Doug Preisse, director of elections in Franklin County (around the city of Columbus) and the chair of the local GOP, told the Columbus Dispatch that he has not ruled out challenging voters before the election due to foreclosure-related address issues.

Now, why ever might they want to do that?

The Macomb County party’s plans to challenge voters who have defaulted on their house payments is likely to disproportionately affect African-Americans who are overwhelmingly Democratic voters.

There you go.

But of course being Republicans there’s always a particularly vicious and venal little twist:

…the McCain campaign’s Michigan headquarters is located in the office buildiing of Trott & Trott, a law firm that specialized in foreclosures, whose founder is a major Republican fund-raiser.

The dirty tricks have barely begun.

Palin is a distraction

John Scalzi gets a bit annoyed at the handwringing in liberal circles after Sarah Palin’s convention speech:

No, seriously: What the fuck is wrong with you? The GOP picks a woman VP 24 years after you do, for the same goddamn reason you did (a contentless call to shore up a shrinking base), and you act like you’ve never seen this movie before? I just don’t know what to say to you about that. Also: squirting yourself messy over a vice presidential candidate. Good fucking gravy, how off the fucking script can you possibly get. For God’s sake, she’s scandal-plagued Atwater spawn from a state with the population of Fort Worth, Texas, whose job it will be to work the lights of the Naval Observatory for four years. She’s a walking, taking advertisement for how easily placated religious conservatives are at this moment in history. She doesn’t walk on water, unless it’s frozen and the moose she’s hunting has wandered out on it. So will you please focus.

What’s more, she’s a distraction. What is Bush doing now everybody is captivated by the Palin McSame show?

Frog-Boiling Their Way To Victory

Arrgh, the Palin, it just goes on and on. Just when you think there couldn’t be anything worse…

The latest? Charging rape victims for the rape testing kits used in investigating the crime.

RNC operatives are adamant they thoroughly and comprehensively vetted this candidate and that they know all the skeletons in her closet. If that’s true (though Republicans and McCain aren’t known for their veracity) it leads one to the inescapable conclusion that revelations already known to the McCain press team are being deliberately drip-fed to the blogosphere to keep them distracted and to wear the public capacity for shock down. It’s war by attrition. Each new story lowers the bar; a pregnant teen daughter? Ho hum. So last week. Lies? Stale news. Racism? So what? Eventually they’ll expose Palin as a kitten-torturing suicide bomber and by that point the media response will be a shrug and articles on Obama’s kids’ hair.

Whilst I love all this stuff and I share emptywheel of Firedoglake’s outrage at the latest story –

Count me in among those who think that this is easily the single most disgusting thing I have seen since the 1600 Crew allowed Abu Gonzales to run the Justice Department. The village idiot of Wasilla could run up debts in excess of $20 million dollars during her tenure, but providing law enforcement (a government service) on a pay-as-you-go basis under the guise of “protect and serve” for women who have been raped hits a new low even among republicans who are law-enforcement junkies willing to toss a DFH in jail for a bad haircut.

What I actually want to know right now is what fresh hell Bush, Cheney and the rump of the neocons are wreaking while the media old and new are otherwise occupied salivating over the latest Palin outrage.

I’m also wondering what on earth the Democrats and Obama’s advisers are up to. Call this a campaign? It’s all very well putting out high-minded response videos but currently the Republicans are controlling the horizontal and the vertical.

“If Team Obama don’t pull their collective fingers out they’re going to lose this thing”, think some Democrats:
